Zagreb - The new Prague

18.03.2006.

'The new Prague'
We awoke our first day in the Catholic country's capital, Zagreb. The city, which has been dubbed "the new Prague," gets short shrift from most tourists, who head straight for the coast.

Its cobblestone streets, Gothic cathedral, coffee culture, cuisine and hilly backdrop reflect that for much of Zagreb's history it was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Our hotel is a sign of the new. Close to the bus stop, the Arcotel Allegra caters to Austrian business travelers. In the evenings, jazz singers entertain in the sleek downstairs lobby, while guests can order a drink or check their e-mail. The spare rooms featured Ikea-like blond wood furniture and are decorated with green apples and red sheets, with black-and-white photographs of famous writers.
